SOWETO – SuperSport United emerged as new MTN8 champions on Saturday evening following a 1-0 victory at Orlando Stadium over Highlands Park.
The Pretoria-based club found the back of the net through lethal striker in the form of Bradley Grobler whose first-half header handed Amatsantsantsa the R8 million cheque and the trophy.
Speaking after the match, the Zimbabwean manager was happy to lift his trophy as first-team coach whilst thanking the management for giving him an opportunity.
‘My first trophy, but at the same time I have to give it to the guys, since day one we have been a family, they accepted me. We got into the final last season [lost to Cape Town City on penalties] but we kept on working,” Tembo told SuperSport TV.

“The players bought to my philosophy and they are the ones running with it now, so it makes it easier for me, that’s why I give it to them and the technical team.
“The board, the CEO Stan Matthews, I know he always gives me a hard time because he believes in me I really appreciate that, even the chairman as well. It’s not easy for them to give an opportunity to someone like me but I really appreciate that.”
On the other hand, his counterpart Owen Da Gama was left to lament their failure to convert their chances upfront, but he was pleased with the application from his troops.
“We created in the first ten minutes, three, four chances but if you don’t take your chances this is what happens. We’re getting there, I’m very proud of the boys, it was not our day but we thank the Lord for carrying us this far and all the thanks go to him,” bemoaned Da Gama to SuperSport TV.

“A forced sub [substitution] so early in the game is rather unfortunate you know. Sometimes players have to be honest if you’re not ready rather say “I’m not ready” but it’s a learning curve for us.
“We didn’t take our chances, we had a forced situation, critical phase of the game, we went to sleep. But all I’m saying is, I’m proud of the boys, they’ve played in the final and for me that is important,” he concluded.
