CAPE TOWN – After helping a stranger with R100 to fill her petrol tank last week, Shell employee Nkosikho Mbele has since thanked South Africans for raising more than R440 000 for him.
The petrol attendant helped a customer, Monet van Deventer, with a mere R100 and had no idea that his one act of kindness would return tenfold as a half a million rand.
Mbele, 28, inspired many South African’s to dig deep into their pockets towards to help him have a better life for his two children and family in Khayelitsha.
After getting help from the petrol attendant, Van Deventer launched a fundraising campaign through BackaBuddy crowdfund in an aim to help Mbele and that money has reached close to half a million rand.
In addition to the almost half a million Rand donation, the 28-year-old also received R500 000 from Shell South Africa to donate to a charity of his choice.
Mbele has since thanked the South Africans for their kindness to donate the money towards bettering his family’s life.
“I am happy that my efforts of helping others are being recognized and passed on to others who also need it the most,” said Mbele to Drum via News24.
“I didn’t expect any of this for real, I was just helping someone, and the rest was God’s doing.”
“I cannot be in possession of such a huge amount of money in my bank account, and can you imagine what people would do to me or my family?”
“I asked BackaBuddy to make special provisions of the money, for my two children instead,” he concluded.
However, social was abuzz with many critical of the company for shortchanging Mbele after showing a good side of him.
Despite the criticism, Shell South Africa’s chairman Hloniphisizwe Mtolo, congratulated Mbele by forking out R500 000 to a charity of his choice as well as promising to fly him to Zanzibar as a recipient at the Shell Excellence awards in 2020.

Meanwhile, some believe the company should buy a house for Mbele whilst some suggesting that he should be promoted to a managerial role at Shell.
