Johannesburg: Sho Madjozi’s victory walk didn’t end at the 2019 South African Music Awards. Maya Christinah Xichavo Wegeri popularly known as Sho Madjozi just won the Best New International Act award at the BET 2019.
Sho Madjozi stole and captured the hearts of many when she emerged rapping in her home language, Xitsonga. In one of her tweets she said “I refused to translate my first three singles because I wanted people to talk to Tsonga people.”
Madjozi’s win was most welcomed by proud Limpopians who couldn’t thank her enough for putting their province on the map with her talent. Celebrities such Black Coffee also congratulated her on Twitter.
27-year-old Madjozi earned recognition following the release of her debut album Limpopo Champions League, which experimented infusing elements from various genres including hip hop and Tsonga music.
Madjozi was nominated in the Best New International Act category together with Teniola Apata from Nigeria, Headie One and Octavian from the UK, and France’s Jokair and Nesly. In the Best International Act category, South African rapper AKA is nominated along with with Nigerian musicians Burna Boy and Mr Eazi.
TimesLive shared part of her thank you speech: “My story is a testament that you can come from any village, in any forgotten part of the world, and still be a superstar. For girls that come from where I am from, which is Limpopo, I just want to say that you don’t need to change who you are, you can still be big,” an emotional Sho said.
Black Coffee was the first South African to win a BET. He won best International Act Africa award in 2016. Drake recently hailed Black Coffee, he reportedly held his hand and told him he’s legend. This shows that Sho Madgozi is on the right pathway to greatness.
